A Day of Art and Historical Reflection

AP Euro made a connection between this year's class and next year's AP US History by swinging by the National Monument to the Forefathers. This monument is dedicated to the Pilgrims who came from England in search of religious freedom. Here, the virtue of Faith is held up by the four pillars of Education, Justice, Morality, and Law.
Mr. Cunningham’s AP European History class traveled to the Art Complex Museum to explore modern art and the museum’s peaceful Japanese Garden, inspired by the Tang Dynasty. Students spent time viewing a variety of artwork and exhibits while experiencing how art, architecture, and nature can connect across cultures and time periods.

The class also extended their learning beyond the museum with a visit to the National Monument to the Forefathers. The monument honors the Pilgrims who came from England in search of religious freedom and highlights the pillars of Education, Justice, Morality, and Law. The trip helped students make meaningful connections between this year’s AP European History curriculum and next year’s AP U.S. History studies through exposure to relevant, local historical landmarks.

Inspiration Into Action: Civics Students Give Back

Civics class
As the final "action" of their Civic Action Project, Mr. Taylor’s Period 3 Civics class was inspired to raise funds to support Family Table Collaborative, a Cape Cod food bank. Student Clara Flynn discovered FTC through her research and invited Executive Director Jeni Wheeler to come speak with the class.

After learning more about the organization during this visit, the class then organized and led three student-run fundraising efforts: a bake sale and two raffle basket sales. Through their hard work, the students helped support the important work of Family Table Collaborative and their mission to assist local families in need. Ms. Wheeler, pictured below, stopped by SMHS to personally thank the students for their efforts and contribution.

SMHS Students Improve Oak Ridge Bike Trails

bike path
Students from Mr. Taylor’s Period 4, 8th grade, Civics class participated participated in a bike trail maintenance project around Oak Ridge School as part of their Civic Action Project.

Facilitated by New England Mountain Biking Association (NEMBA) President Frank Merola and other organization members, students grabbed rakes, clippers, and loppers to help clean up and improve the new mountain biking facilities accessible from the Oak Ridge parking lots.
The project was initiated by student Jackson Porter, who contacted NEMBA to ask how the class could get involved and support the community. Students enjoyed the opportunity to get outdoors, work together, and make a positive contribution to a local recreational space used by many community members.

The experience was a perfect blend of community service and civic action.
