CASTLE CHRONICLES

December 15, 2025

Dear SMHS Families,

We understand that the days ahead may be especially difficult for many of our students, given how deeply loved the Cochrane family is within our community. The impact of this tragic loss is felt across all grade levels and ages. Please know that our Student Support Team is available to assist all students who may need extra care during this time.

If you have concerns about your child or would like additional information, we encourage you to contact the school at (508) 888-4900 so we can help.

It is an honor to be part of a school community that shows its strength by coming together with care and compassion during times of sorrow and struggle.

Thank you for your partnership. It is something we feel every day, but especially in moments like these.

                                                                    Jeanne Nelson

HOLIDAY CHEER IN THE HALLS

SMHS was filled with festive spirit as teachers came together to greet students with Christmas carols and holiday favorites. Their performance created a joyful start to the school day. Moments like these highlight the strong relationships and welcoming culture that make SMHS such a special place during the holiday season.

A Sweet Finish to a Season of Growth

The SMHS Unified Volleyball Cookie Decorating event on December 8 was a joyful way to wrap up an incredible season of growth, teamwork, and camaraderie. Over the fall months, students from across the school came together to build skills, support one another, and celebrate what it means to be part of an inclusive community.

The Unified Volleyball Club, open to all students September through December, continues to be a space where friendships thrive, confidence grows, and everyone feels welcome, on and off the court. The cookie-decorating celebration was the perfect finishing touch to a season filled with fun!

CREATIVITY WOVEN TOGETHER

Students in Mr. Dobbins’ Design I class and Mrs. D’Avena’s 7th Grade Art class are collaborating on a creative, cross-grade assignment focused on original textile design.
Design I students created custom patterns digitally and applied them to real-world items such as bags, dresses, and rugs, while 7th graders explored hands-on techniques using printmaking ink, paint, and thread on fabric.

Working in teams, students will bring their individual designs together into one cohesive display. Final concepts range from virtual car tours and magazines to websites and art galleries, highlighting creativity, collaboration, and the design process from concept to completion.

STUDENT SOLVE: Tackling Real-World Challenges

Computer Science students in school field trip

SMHS Students Take on Real-World Challenges Through the One8 Student Solve, an immersive experience that connects classroom learning with real-world problem solving. During the event, students worked in teams alongside industry and community mentors to tackle authentic challenges and develop creative, thoughtful solutions.

Partnering with the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC), a nonprofit organization that raises funds for cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, students explored mission-driven challenges related to community engagement and large-scale event planning, gaining insight into how problem solving and innovation support meaningful impact.

One student team was mentored by Mr. Kevin Sareault, a 30-year Pan-Mass Challenge participant, whose long-standing commitment to PMC offered students a powerful perspective on leadership, service, and perseverance.

SMHS’s participation highlights our commitment to applied learning, community partnerships, and preparing students to see themselves as capable problem solvers beyond the classroom.

READY, SET, CODE!

Students in Exploring Computer Science are strengthening their coding skills through hands-on work with Sphero robotics. This physical computing approach gives them immediate feedback, helping them learn to program quickly and confidently.

Throughout the week-long lesson, students move from basic driving and coding challenges to designing and building their own mini-golf courses—then programming their Sphero robots to successfully navigate each obstacle.

GRADE 7 STUDENTS SHARE THE JOY OF READING

Students reading to elementary students
Grade 7 students thoroughly enjoyed visiting the kindergarten and first-grade classrooms to read stories with younger students. The older students relished the opportunity to step into leadership roles, reading with confidence, while the younger students eagerly listened, engaged with the stories, and looked up to their older peers.
The experience fostered meaningful connections across grade levels and highlighted the joy of learning, mentorship, and community.

SANDWICH’S CIVIL WAR LEGACY

On Tuesday, December 9, members of Rho Kappa, the National Social Studies Honor Society, visited the Town Archives at the Sandwich Public Library. Students viewed artifacts related to George L. Haines, a Sandwich resident who served during the Civil War. They also learned about the role of an archivist and explored ways to use the archives to deepen their own historical research.
Thank you to Sandwich Public Library for their valuable partnership with SMHS.

ADVANCING LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY THROUGH THE SEAL OF BILITERACY

seal of biliteracy
At SMHS, we proudly recognize students who demonstrate proficiency in English and another language through the Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy. This statewide honor acknowledges students who can read, write, and speak in two languages—and it comes with meaningful benefits. Students who earn the seal can qualify for college credit at Massachusetts state universities and graduate with a valuable credential that highlights their linguistic skills.

The Seal of Biliteracy is open to students who are bilingual in any language, whether learned at home, in school, or through personal experience. Many students who are fluent in another language don’t always realize they qualify, so we encourage families and students to explore this opportunity and learn more about the assessment process.

If you or your student is bilingual and interested in pursuing the Seal of Biliteracy, please reach out to Liam Kelly, World Language Department Chair at lkelly@sandwich.k12.ma.us
or Camila Oliveira, District EL Coordinator coliveira@sandwich.k12.ma.us
