Last month, seniors, Shreya Shukla and Hannah Sareault, spoke at the Finnish-American Society in Osterville, sharing insights from their two-year research experience as part of the United Nation Global Sustainability Project Initiative with Finnish students from Hämeenlinna, Finland.
This collaborative project brought Finnish students to SMHS in October 2024, where they visited classes and experienced New England culture. In April 2025, SMHS students traveled to Finland.
During their presentation, Shreya and Hannah discussed the differences they observed between American and Finnish educational systems, as well as broader cultural contrasts.
The event was well attended, with more than 20 society members joining to support and learn from our students!

Our SMHS Blue Knights Lacrosse players visited The Forestdale School to share their love of the game with elementary students during PE class. Not only do our players introduce younger students to the basics of lacrosse, but they also get the chance to serve as positive role models in our school community.
From scooping and passing to fun shooting stations, the gym was full of energy, encouragement, and lots of smiles. It’s always a great day when our older Blue Knights inspire the next generation.
Thank you to the Forestdale PE staff and Coach Mike McNeill for supporting this tradition and making this experience possible!

Last week SMHS school counselors worked with the sophomore class on career exploration through interactive workshops. Students completed a career interest survey and researched career paths aligned with their strengths, skills, and personal interests.
It was a great opportunity for students to reflect on future goals and explore the many pathways available!

Recently a group of SMHS seniors explored Cape Cod Community College where they heard from college administrators, professors and current students. Seniors asked questions and learned firsthand what life at 4Cs is really like.
The group toured multiple buildings on campus, met faculty along the way and got an inside look at academic programs and campus resources. The visit wrapped up with lunch in the student hall alongside high school students from both Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard.
As part of the ongoing Pathways program, seniors will continue working with Cape Cod Community College faculty to begin the application process and explore future opportunities.

The SMHS Girls Who Code club continues to grow coding skills in a fun and creative way! Thanks to a generous grant from Cape Cod Community College, members now have Imagi Charms, programmable pixel devices that make learning to code interactive and artistic.
At a recent meeting, students coded their charms for the first time, experimenting with colors, patterns, and personalized designs. The room was full of collaboration, problem-solving, and excitement when their code lit up the device right in their hands.
Thank-you to 4Cs for supporting STEM opportunities for our students, and to Ella Muhlebach for her vision to bringing Girls Who Code to SMHS. We celebrate female coders making an impact in our SMHS computer science community!
If you would like to join Girls Who Code, please contact Ella Muhlebach or Ms. Beth Donahue.

Students from AP Computer Science Principles class participated in a Hack-a-thon at the Museum of Science in Boston. Their challenge: develop a grant proposal for an urban outdoor space that benefits the public.
Working alongside students from two other schools, they used an AI model to explore potential community impacts, identify suitable plants, and estimate project costs. Throughout the experience, students gained appreciation for collaboration, creativity, and responsible use of technology in problem-solving.
It was a great day of innovation and teamwork for our Blue Knights!

Criminal Justice Professor John Szucs of Cape Cod Community College visited Mr. Welch’s Introduction to Criminal Justice class to share a wealth of real-world experience from his time as director of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI): a unit specializing in crime scene evidence collection and forensic analysis.
Students were able to examine actual released evidence, including latent and inked fingerprint impressions, while learning how investigators use photography and forensic techniques to document crime scenes.
This hands-on lesson gave students a powerful look at the science behind fingerprinting and connected directly to their coursework on law enforcement. It was a valuable and fascinating experience for our future criminal justice professionals!

At SMHS, we proudly recognize students who demonstrate proficiency in English and another language through the Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy. This statewide honor acknowledges students who can read, write, and speak in two languages—and it comes with meaningful benefits. Students who earn the seal can qualify for college credit at Massachusetts state universities and graduate with a valuable credential that highlights their linguistic skills.
The Seal of Biliteracy is open to students who are bilingual in any language, whether learned at home, in school, or through personal experience. Many students who are fluent in another language don’t always realize they qualify, so we encourage families and students to explore this opportunity and learn more about the assessment process.
If you or your student is bilingual and interested in pursuing the Seal of Biliteracy, please reach out to Liam Kelly, World Language Department Chair at lkelly@sandwich.k12.ma.us
or Camila Oliveira, District EL Coordinator.
