Sandwich Soul

SHS ADVANCED SHOW CHOIR

Sandwich High School’s very own show choir - Sandwich Soul, is under the choral direction of Melinda Lasit, and under the theatrical direction and choreography by Kevin Lasit. The show choir is now going on their sixth year, and within the past five years, the group has become an award winning show choir taking first place with superior and excellent ratings consecutively at local choral festivals and competitions, and last year, Sandwich Soul took the over-all highest points award for the choral music category in New England. Sandwich Soul was also highlighted on the television show Chronicle as part of the town of Sandwich's arts and cultural district. Sandwich Soul also does many local performances for the community of Sandwich such as singing the National Anthem for Memorial Day and the DeConto Memorial Road Race, several holiday performances at Heritage Museum and Gardens, and an annual performance at Sandwich’s Holly Days and First Night of Sandwich. Sandwich Soul was also highlighted at the town of Sandwich's 375th year celebration and ceremonies and sang the national anthem at a Boston Celtics nationally televised game. The show choir has toured to NYC and participated in Disney’s Broadway Musical Theatre workshop and also participated in an international choral festival taking first place. Soul has toured to Orlando, Florida, where they performed a medley from the musical Wicked, in an international choral festival, where they took first place with a superior rating. They also participated in a highly acclaimed accredited Disney Broadway workshop.

Mission Statement:

The purpose of Sandwich Soul is to encourage student's artistic expression through music and theatrical work helping students to become more confident musicians and people. We strive to have all our vocalists collaborating together to put on a beautiful show and meaningful experience here at SHS and throughout our community. Our members, 9th through 12th graders, will develop people skills and learn about leadership that will stay with them throughout high school and the rest of their lives. We want our students to feel they are in a safe environment to be themselves, have fun and create!

Attendance:

Our club takes attendance at every meeting. We meet in either D155 or in the theatre from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, every Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and some Wednesdays. The advisors and officers are flexible and understand that everyone has different schedules, but we believe that our members should make a commitment to Sandwich Soul in order to create beautiful music. Members are only allowed to miss five rehearsals during a season (Winter season = September through December and

Spring season = January through June), or we may have to replace them. Every circumstance is a case by case basis, and there are special circumstances which are excused.

Sandwich Soul is ensemble based and not just about solo work. There are many opportunities to perform solos, and we encourage all members to be positive and support to everyone in the group whether they obtain a solo or not.

*Students who make it into Sandwich Soul are eligible to take the Advanced Show Choir Honors course during the school day for honors credit. Only members of Sandwich Soul are allowed to enroll in this class.

Sandwich Soul is a touring choral group, and each year we alternate participation in a local Massachusetts festival or touring out of state to a National festival. The tour price varies each year, but local tour years are approximately $100, and out of state tours range from $400 to upwards of $1500. All information for tour years is given at the beginning of the year, and it is not required to go on tour to be in Soul, but recommended. J All Soul members are also given lots of opportunities to fundraise for tour.

Our club also sells tickets for a minimal donation of $5.00 for semester concerts. We also sell concessions at our Winter and Spring concerts. We also do a fundraiser concert in March which highlights Soul and goes directly towards their tour price. We also sometimes have a raffle drawing or sell tshirts or scarves. And we also have car washes as well. We would like to continue to expand our fundraisers.
