Update from Sandwich District Safety Team


The Sandwich District Safety Team is composed of town officials, police and fire department representatives, and the School Resource Officer - working in collaboration with the Sandwich Public Schools. Members from the district include the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, Principals and Assistant Principals, Security officers, and the Facilities Department. Families are represented by one parent volunteer, and a School Committee member.  It is expected that other Sandwich Public Schools staff members may join the team to contribute expertise as needed to achieve specific goals. 


The team has met twice so far this fall, and is planning to meet every two weeks. One of the main goals of the group is to establish and maintain trust within the community that public safety and school officials have both proactive and reactive systems in place in the case of an emergency, or an event at one of our schools. Families will receive regular updates from the Safety Team via the principal’s newsletters that are sent out each weekend.  


In January 2022, the Safety Group drafted a charter with the following Mission Statement.

Mission:

To promote and maintain a safe, supportive and productive environment for students, staff and the community that focuses on early identification of all risk exposures, prevention, training and mitigation through an active and effective risk management program. 


Immediate goals of the 2022-2023 Safety Team:

  • Contract with a professional Risk Assessment company to visit the district, tour the schools, talk with staff and determine needs 

    • Dr. Maruszczak is in touch with two potential vendors

  • Provide Emergency Response training for all Sandwich Schools staff 

    • To be done at the January All-Day Professional Development Day - Training provided and coordinated by Sandwich Police and Fire

  • Continue with professional development provided to school principals and assistant principals regarding reunification protocols 

  • Establish a signed agreement between the school district and police department that outlines the roles and responsibilities of both the school administration and the School Resource Officer (SRO).
