The mission of the Sandwich Public Schools Science Department is to ensure high-quality, rigorous, standards-based instruction at all levels in order to graduate students with strong problem-solving skills that will empower them to participate in an increasingly scientific and technological world.
The STEM Academy began to serve 7th and 8th graders in 2014. Our system has made concerted efforts since then to infuse Engineering and Technology K-12 as well as update the quality, and time on science learning. The Sandwich Science Program is fully in line with the recently released (March 2016) Massachusetts Curriculum Science Standards .
The Massachusetts standards are based on the Nationally recognized "Next Generation of Science Standards" which focuses teaching on getting students to think like a scientist and to DO science rather than to memorize facts. Our science program embeds a variety of opportunities for inquiring, hypothesizing, observing, collecting data, applying concepts and then using evidence gathered to construct data based explanations.
