Reading Intervention

Meeting the unique needs of students with high-quality instruction designed to help close gaps

Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery is an effective, short-term early intervention for first grade children who are experiencing difficulty with reading and writing. The children in Reading Recovery receive a daily one-on-one lesson which lasts for 30 minutes. The lessons, designed specifically for each child, are taught by a specially trained teacher.

Typically these students will reach grade level expectations in 12 to 20 weeks. At that time, their series of lessons are discontinued and a new student will begin individualized instruction

Reading Recovery is based on substantial research about how children learn to read and write. Its roots are in Marie Clay's research in classrooms and clinics as well as intensive studies from other disciplines. The What Works Clearinghouse, an independent review of Reading Recovery's experimental research, clearly establishes the effectiveness of the intervention, naming it the most effective of all interventions studied.

Leveled Literacy Intervention...LLI

LLI is a small group intervention for students in Kindergarten - Grade 8. The LLI Lesson provides additional practice in daily reading and writing to help students flourish as readers and writers.

The lessons are fast-paced, engaging, and include reading, writing, phonics and word study and the extensive use of oral language. Teachers receive training in the components of the lessons and in systematic assessment of the readers. The goal of this intervention is to bring together small groups of students who have similar literacy needs and provide the instruction they need to reach grade level achievement. Research has shown that most students can be brought to grade level in 14-18 weeks; however, this intervention may also be used as a continuing support.

Recent research studies have confirmed the effectiveness of LLI in grades K-2; during the 2015-2016 school year, the Sandwich Public Schools was proud to be a research site for an LLI grades 3-5 efficacy study.
