Project 351

The following was written by Mr. Jeff Duffany, 8th grade advisor and history teacher:

"On Saturday, January 14, STEM Academy 8th grader Jack Burgess attended the Project 351 launch day in Boston. Project 351 is a state-wide service organization that honors one 8th grade student from each city and town in Massachusetts. Saturday's launch day took Jack to Faneuil Hall for a kick off event with Governor Charlie Baker, service at a local middle school, and the Kennedy Library. Jack was selected for Project 351 for his ethic of service, humility, compassion, and kindness. As part of this project, Jack will serve for one year as an ambassador from Sandwich. He will run a clothing drive in the spring and will be given leadership training at a reunion event in May."

Congratulations Jack for your accomplishments and dedication to helping others.

Congratulations to 7th grade science teacher Mrs. Renee Fudala for obtaining two grants for her zombie bee project. Mrs. Fudala received $500 each from the Cape Cod Five Bank and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Her students will use the funds to build light traps for capturing "zombee" (deliberate spelling) bees. Many ecologically important honey bees in the United States are infected by a parasite that causes them to be attracted to lights at night and to exhibit "zombie-like" behavior. This program is part of the citizen science watch sponsored by the Planet Bee Foundation. It will give the 7th graders an opportunity for a hands-on study of the important process of pollination and its relationship to sustaining agriculture in the country.
